KPMG Night Fever

What an experience it was. My first ever D&D, The KPMG Night Fever, at Raffles Convention Centre. It's always great when it provides an opportunity for all staff to just let your hair down and have some fun together, without the need to discuss work. Not to mention that this would have been a much-needed breather in the lead-up to the Super-Peak season. As if to reiterate subtlely the fact that work still comes first, many actually turned up pretty late and some had to leave early due to Stock-take commitments.

Theme for the night was retro but I guess, as is case for such D&Ds, many did not actually dress according to the theme. In fact, I did not see as many Poker-dot dresses and huge hair bands as I had anticipated. In terms of entertainment, it was pretty disappointing actually despite the fact that Adrian Pang was the host. Nonetheless, I suppose most wouldn't be too bothered with what's happening on the stage given the amount of cam-whoring taking place off it.

It's now exactly one month since I started my internship with KPMG and honestly speaking, I couldn't have asked for more in terms of how much I have been able to learn. There were always fears prior to the internship that we would only be 'glorified' administrative assistants but those fears were immediately dispelled with the workload assigned to me. I've always been asked, "How's work?" "Good Fun.." It really was, working your way through piles of Trial Balances and Working Papers and picking up new knowledge bit by bit. Stories of KPMG's seniors being unfriendly also proved to be unfounded judging from the amount of help that I've received from everyone in the department. I've also been fortunate enough to be on an engagement whereby I need not work till the wee hours of the morning. In many ways, achieving a good "work-life balance".. LoLx. Much as I want to take this opportunity to learn, I don't want to risk burning out myself and also spend some quality time in Singapore before 21 Feb arrives. Speaking of which, just received some good news on my One Month Anniversary of Internship. It's Saturday, It's Jan 12, and I'll be back in client's place for more work. Great Fun certainly. Fair enough, my senior didn't ask me to come back on Saturday but as part of the team, you don't just leave them in the lurch to rush a deadline anyway, thus my insistence. In any case, I would have been working anyway, just that it's now at Farrer Park instead of Tuas. =)

In many ways, the technical knowledge that one can learn from this internship somewhat pale in comparison with the more subtle yet significant issues of attitudes towards work as well as improving problem-solving skills. I'm constantly scrutinizing myself on that and I'm somewhat disappointed with my performance so far. Just somehow feel that perhaps there are some issues where I could have resolved it much more efficiently and effectively. Coincidental or not, just at this juncture, comments from my senior suggested otherwise and at least now I can breathe easier and look forward to more work in my remaining days at Shenton Way.
